Moore gets more to empower community representation

Voices of Moore has received a grant of $14,000 from Climate 200’s Community Accelerator Fund.

The grant will support our efforts to build a grassroots movement in the Moore electorate, located in the northern coastal suburbs of Perth, kickstarting our search for an independent community backed candidate and a local donation drive.

Voices of Moore was founded by community members who felt that the current political landscape was failing to address their needs and concerns.

Through a community listening process, residents across the electorate are expressing their desire for a political system where representatives prioritise the interests of their constituents and future generations over party politics.

Moore will be an electorate to watch in the upcoming Federal election. In 2022 the margin of the Liberal incumbent, Ian Goodenough, reduced Moore from being a “safe seat” with a 12% margin to less than 1%. Mr Goodenough has now lost Liberal preselection.

Over the years as a safe seat the voters of Moore have been shortchanged. In 2022, for example, federal electorates received federal community grants averaging $18.5 million. Moore received just $1.5 million because it was a “safe” seat which the major parties decided did not deserve their attention.

By contrast, for example, a marginal seat like Peter Dutton’s electorate of Dickson in Queensland received $43.6 million.

Voices of Moore spokesperson and local resident, Shannon Ziegelaar, said “The Moore electorate is ready for a change in the way our community is represented. Speaking with members of the Moore community, it is evident people are disengaged with the current political landscape.

“It is easy to feel disempowered when we see politicians more focused on their political point scoring and following the party line rather than addressing major issues for the community and for future generations like housing and climate change."

If you would like to join the movement for better representation, please donate to Voices of Moore or sign up to volunteer.
