Political representation on the agenda as new group launches in the Federal electorate of Moore

Community members across the electorate of Moore, in the northern coastal suburbs of Perth, have joined their voices together, to push for better representation in Federal Parliament.

The group, Voices of Moore, seeks to invigorate the democratic process through community consultation, including conversations, listening and community events.

Local resident, Shannon Ziegelaar, said she was inspired to join after contrasting the example of political representation by Independent MP Kate Chaney, in the neighbouring seat of Curtin, with that provided by the existing representation in Moore. This has been further emphasised by the recent unsightly internal pre-selection stoush between sitting Liberal MP, Ian Goodenough and the incoming pre-selected candidate.

“It is evident people are disengaged with the current political landscape. It is easy to feel disempowered when we see politicians more focused on their own careers and political games rather than addressing major issues for the community and future generations like housing, cost of living and climate change.” Ms Ziegelaar said.

“But we know that that change happens when ordinary people take action. That is why I have joined Voices of Moore. I want to be part of a community that fosters a political system where representatives work for their constituents and future generations rather than party bosses.”

Kevin O’Keefe OAM is a longtime resident of Moore and has been inspired by the community-based approach from the ‘Voices of’ movement.

“Outcomes are better when people are actively engaged in the political process. I am passionate about building a better community here in Moore, and I believe that getting everyday people engaged in politics and holding elected representatives to account is an important step,” Mr O’Keefe said.

Voices of Moore plans to host a series of community conversations, workshops, and surveys in the coming months to identify the highest priority issues for residents.

By engaging directly with the residents of Moore, the group aims to put people and the community back into the heart of political representation, including capturing the community's many voices, and identifying key issues and concerns that need to be addressed by elected representatives. They indicated that a potential outcome from the community listening is identifying and building support for an Independent Candidate in the next federal election as a genuine community representative - prioritising the people of Moore and their issues rather than allegiance to a political party.
